Description

Goteburg, Sweden --- With the 2011 World Match Racing Tour reaching its halfway point (with four events complete and four remaining) it was the stunning setting of Marstrand nestled in Sweden's western archipelago which provided the arena for the fifth stage of the Tour. How would Australian skippers Torvar Mirsky and Peter Gilmour handle the Scandinavian conditions? Was victory in Portimão, Portugal a sign of a return to form for Ian Williams (GBR)? Would hometown hero Johnie Berntsson (SWE) cause a splash on home waters in his debut year as a Tour Card Holder? Could Francesco Bruni (ITA) extend his lead at the top of the Tour standings? All the action -- including one of the most thrilling finals so far this season -- was played out in front of a crowd of more than 100,000 spectators.

What is the World Match Racing Tour?

The ISAF World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is the world’s leading professional sailing series featuring 9 World Championship events across the globe.

In 2011, the World Tour will offer a total US$1.75million in prize money with points awarded at each event culminating in the crowning of the “ISAF Match Racing World Champion”.

The prize pool will include a US$500,000 bonus fund for the top nine teams in the Championship.

Head-to-head racing takes place close to the shore for the general public to follow the races as virtual on-the-water stadiums.
