Portimao, Portugal --- French skipper Mathieu Richard found his form in the opening Qualifying Session at the Portimão Portugal Match Cup winning four of his five matches to take the lead. One of the four wins was against reigning event champion, Australian skipper Peter Gilmour. Despite the loss, Gilmour found himself in third place overall, winning three of his five matches on the opening day. Another Aussie skipper struggled, Torvar Mirsky went down to double match racing World Champion Ian Williams of Great Britain. Mirsky however did win his only other race for the day, finishing in contention at 1-1.

The ISAF World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is the world’s leading professional sailing series featuring 9 World Championship events across the globe.

In 2011, the World Tour will offer a total US$1.75million in prize money with points awarded at each event culminating in the crowning of the “ISAF Match Racing World Champion”.

The prize pool will include a US$500,000 bonus fund for the top nine teams in the Championship.

Head-to-head racing takes place close to the shore for the general public to follow the races as virtual on-the-water stadiums.
