Top 10 Images - September 2009

If a picture tells 1,000 words, then WCSN is about to review September 2009 in over 10,000 of them. Each month we will present a recap of the massive moments and memorable individuals from the month just past in photo format. With the IAAF Golden League concluding, a new dressage world record, an Aussie bronze at the Trampolining World Cup and the Trans-Tasman netball series all taking place in September, there is plenty of photos worth reliving. 10) The final score in the fourth match of the best of five series at Invercargill, NZ was a nail-biting 47-46, with an emphatic green and gold team ending the hopes of the home town heroes. Australia's win in the fourth match gave them an unassailable 3-1 series lead.


9) Twenty year-old Beijing Olympian, Naazmi Johnston has manufactured Australia’s strongest ever result at a rhythmic gymnastics world championship in Mie, Japan.

The 2009 IAAF Athletics Golden League concluded, with the highly anticipated climax in Brussels, Belgium. The focus was on three athletes in particular, Sanya Richards (USA), Elena Isinbaeva (RUS) and Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) who all had their sights on the US$1m jackpot that was on offer. All three of them delivered in front of a capacity crowd of 47,000.


7) China's former world number one Xie Xingfang announced that she will retire from badminton after the Chinese National Games. Her career lasted more than a decade. She won world titles in 2005 and 2006, plus an Olympic silver medal in 2008.


6) A testing combination of growing warmth, cracking early pace and an emphatic lead resulted in Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie winning his fourth straight Berlin Marathon.


5) The newly formed Australian pairing of Blake Gaundry and Ben Wilden (pictured) secured the bronze medal in a spectacular display at trampolining’s FIG World Cup which took place in Zielona Gora, Poland.


4) Australia’s Nathan Outteridge has been nominated as one of only five men in line to win the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award for 2009.


3) An incredible 2009, culminating in an ANZ Championship saw Bianca Chatfield become a WCSN Athlete in Focus.


2) World Championship bronze medallist Emily Seebohm set a new Commonwealth record for the 50m backstroke at the Queensland Short Course Championships at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.


1) Australian Fabrice Lapierre was $35,000 richer after winning the men's long jump title at the World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki, Greece.
